Dave's Notes for Windows 2000 Professional
(Exam 70-210)

by Dave Lilligren from Dave's Help Page for Win2k Certification! for Networkdesigner.net

Well, this was my FIRST Windows 2000 certification exam, which I took on 10/3/2000.  I was a bit nervous, to say the least!  I had hoped to take both the Professional and Server exam, but simply ran out of time.  I am rescheduled to take the Server exam (215) on Monday, October 9th.  I needed 620 to pass, and scored a 760.  There were a total of 50 questions, and I was able to mark each question for review.

There were lots of questions related to mass installations.  Know the difference between .msi and mst.  Know the requirements on a network for RIS.  I was “tricked” by a question related to RIS.  Only 10 out of 50 computers correctly installed.  I boiled down the possible answers to either a DHCP issue (needed more IP addresses in the pool) or needed to add more computer accounts to Active Directory.  Well, I initially put the latter, but changed it back to DHCP (which I now believe is the wrong answer).  Why?  Because a regular user accounts can create up to 10 computer accounts in Win2K (unlike NT 4.0 in which only Administrators can create any computer accounts).

They love to throw in stuff in questions that have absolutely nothing to do with the answer?  You have to learn to wade through the extraneous information.

You need to understand how group policy objects work.  Typically, they will be the solution to the problems listed in the question.

Also, there are some basic networking questions, particularly related to TCP/IP and routing.  Just pay attention to the default gateway address and the IP configuration on the host in question!

There were also a few printing questions (although, surprisingly, no internet printing questions).  Know how to redirect printing to another device when one is disabled (it’s in the ports!).  Know how to troubleshoot printing errors.

I also had several questions on Off-Line folders.  Some were rather confusing.  Make sure you study this topic well!

Not too much on disks.  Make sure you know the difference between basic and dynamic, simple and spanned.  Remember, there is NO fault tolerance in Professional!  Remember also that you cannot extend a volume that was once part of a basic disk.

Be real familiar with the interface and how to access the various configuration tools (e.g., System Tools, Computer Management), and what you can do with each.  Know how to create an Emergency Repair Disk (changed from how we did it in NT 4.0).

What helped me to pass was to simply use the process of elimination.  This was particularly helpful for the questions with which I was initially clueless.  Fortunately, at least two of the answers are usually ludicrous or irrelevant.  Usually, you can then decide between the two logical answers.
